Nephrocalcinosis in Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) II: Macroscopic pathology, moderate and severe cases

In kidney and other such organs, such as the stomach and the muscle.

The sub-clinical condition of the disease can be diagnosed through histology (kidney, stomach), associated to the monitoring of variables, such as the hematocrit and the creatinine.

The clincal condition can be evaluated according to the severity of the macroscopic findings, having a scale to classify the degree that the kidney has been affected and signs present in other organs.

Introduction

The clincal classification of nephrocalcinosis is based on the degree that the kidney has been affected and the external clinical signs such as exophthalmos and swollen belly and the internal signs, such as ascites, pale liver and other.

Table 1 shows the criteria used for classifying the clincal Nephrocalcinosis. The prognosis of the affected batch depends on how often and how severe is the condition.

Table 1: Clincal criteria for classifying nephrocalcinosis

Condition of the disease

Morphological findings

Slight

Isolated calcareous deposits, affecting less than 50% of the length of the ureters. The population shows decrease in growth and increase in the conversion factor.

Moderate

Over 50% of the length of the ureters shows calcareous deposits. You can see that they are dilated. In some conditions you can see that the later part of the kidney is affected and renomegaly affecting less than 30%. The population shows a decrease in their growth and an increase in the conversion factor.

Severe

Over 50% of the ureters show marked calcareous deposits. The ureters are dilated and snake like. Externally the fish show abdominal dilation. Internally, you can see ascites, pale liver, pale kidney, renomegaly. The population shows a decrease in the growth and increase in the conversion factor.

Figure 1: Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) affected by a moderate condition of nephrocalcinosis. You can see calcification in less than 50% of the renal tubules, paleness and posterior renomegaly.

Figure 2: Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) affected by a moderate to a severe condition of nephrocalcinosis. You can see calcification in less than 50% of the ureters and posterior calcification in less than 50% of the kidney.
